Mark Jewell and the LibDems say NWDA must listen to the publics objections to a totem pole on Winckley Square.

plans for Winckley Square as a totem carbuncle on the face of Preston.

Mark Jewell and the LibDem group on Preston City Council have submitted their

objections to aspects of the plan for Winckley Square. The cut off date for

representations is on Wednesday 3rd Dec.

The letter submitted accepts many aspects of the plans including the need for urgent

attention to the drainage problems, and new railings with a memorial to suffragette

Edith Rigby.

However, Mark Jewell comments, "The real issue is when the money men impose a scheme

on Preston. The scheme should be amended to take on board what Preston wants. Many

users of the square have objected to this application when in fact their objection

is really to the totem pole and fountain, which will need to be maintained and is

out of character for the square.

He added, "I hope the views of users of the square will be taken on board and that

the North West Development Agency (NWDA) will continue to work with Preston City

Council and the plans amended accordingly."
